Climate change is worsening wildfires across the United States and putting more people and places at risk. Warming from heat-trapping pollution is affecting weather conditions in ways that increase the risks of wildfire. Long-term warming trends are drying out forests, grasslands, and other landscapes — helping fires spread and hindering opportunities to fight and prevent them.

What is a fire weather day?

Fire weather can generally be described as hot, dry, and windy conditions which prime the landscape for extreme fire behavior. The presence of fire weather conditions does not mean a fire is guaranteed to occur. Instead, fire weather acts as a threat multiplier — increasing the chances that, should a fire break out, that fire will be much more dangerous and destructive than if the conditions were otherwise.

While the definition of fire weather may vary, we define a fire weather day as any calendar day when temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed co-occur at or above their respective thresholds (as defined below) for at least two hours.

We looked at each fire weather variable — temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed — separately to better understand whether they meet their respective threshold more or less now compared to fifty-one years ago. Red colors show where each variable is meeting its threshold more often and blue shows where each variable is meeting its threshold less often.
